World Prematurity Day – 17th November

“Small Steps, Big Hopes”

By Dr. Saroj Bajiya, Consultant Gynecologist & Obstetrician, Saroj Hospital, Sikar

Every year on 17th November, the world comes together to observe World Prematurity Day — a day dedicated to raising awareness about preterm birth and the challenges faced by premature babies and their families. As a gynecologist at Saroj Hospital, Sikar, I see firsthand the miracles and the struggles that come with preterm deliveries, and I believe awareness is the first step towards prevention and better outcomes.

What Is Prematurity ?

A premature baby is one born before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy. Globally, nearly 1 in 10 babies is born too soon. Prematurity can lead to various health challenges, such as breathing difficulties, feeding problems, infections, and delayed development. However, with timely medical care and advanced neonatal support, many preterm babies grow up to live healthy, fulfilling lives.

Why Premature Birth Happens

There isn’t always one clear reason, but some common risk factors include:

  • High blood pressure or diabetes during pregnancy

  • Infections

  • Multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.)

  • Lifestyle factors like smoking, stress, or poor nutrition

  • Inadequate spacing between pregnancies

  • Previous preterm birth

At Saroj Hospital, Sikar, we focus on early detection and preventive care through regular antenatal check-ups, screening tests, and personalized pregnancy management.

How Saroj Hospital Supports Preterm Babies

At Saroj Hospital, we are equipped to manage both high-risk pregnancies and premature deliveries. Our facilities include:
